The word itself sounds out of this world, but it is actually more inward and vibing more towards – into this world. That is of course, if we are referencing you as the world…
When beginning my psychology journey this was one of the first topics that came forward as well as individuality (individual differences podcast on my Spotify – link), the first topic that absolutely fascinated me and made psychology go from boring to very interesting. It made me see psychology for what it is, the depths it can go to, the persistence that it needed. It also allowed me to see myself for what I was too and how i already slotted into psychology from my own experiences and individual personal growth.
Introspection is when we look into ourselves amongst our own patterns feelings and behaviours and have a ‘review’ so we try to understand why, how and what these psychological processes are, we have some reflective time.
I like to look at it as an introspection mirror, it is easier to feel it. So if you had a mirror on your brain, what would you see?
An introspection mirror is a metaphorical or literal concept used to reflect on one’s inner self — thoughts, emotions, motivations, and behaviours. It’s about looking inward with honesty and awareness, much like how a physical mirror reflects your outer appearance.
It often involves:
- Self-awareness: Recognizing your emotions and reactions.
- Evaluation: Assessing your motives, values, and decisions.
- Growth: Learning from your experiences to make better choices.
If you’re thinking of it creatively or symbolically, here are a few interpretations and uses:
- Personal Growth Tool: A journal or reflective practice that helps you examine your actions and decisions.
- Mindfulness Exercise: Standing before a mirror and observing your emotions without judgment, fostering self-awareness.
We do generally partake in this process throughout the day, by wondering if we made the right choices, whether we said the right things, and then other negative thoughts can kind of come forward such as guilt, sadness and in extreme cases more severe affects such as PTSD or suicidal thoughts.
But there are reasons why we do this, it helps us to understand our triggers and our glimmers, it allows us to see what we don’t like, and what we do like – it also helps us to understand our boundaries and where we need to progress.
Introspection really is a phenomenon of the brain, although there are things that can affect our processing within potential introspective pathways such as being too busy, giving out to much, general distractions, brain fog, then there is the more negative sides such as trauma, illness both physical and mental, PTSD. But if there is not a moment, please ensure that just one evening a week you have your own space just to relax, process and unwind. It is good to spend time on our own, this is where the most growth happens, the best ideas also come from silence! :O 😛 😊
But what we must always remember is that time heals, and we are the keepers to the way we progress with that time. We can not conquer the world if we can not get out of bed, but if we can’t get out of bed then we need to understand why we can not get out of bed. We need to go backwards and understand where it began. (Please if you need support drop me a message and I will get back to you as quick as I can.
